July
12 & 13, 2003 - The 11th Annual Kubota World Cup International
Karate Association World Championships
On
July 12th, Team KMA competitor Ira Trifu competed at the 11th Annual
Kubota World Cup IKA World Championships and had a very successful
weekend. Ira dominated her Self Defence division (with the assitance
of KMA super uke Sacha Ramberan) and won the division's world title
in style. Ira went on to perform a strong Enpi in her kata division
and fought hard in her kumite division (with one 3 point kick to
the head in her final match making the difference) and brought home
2 more IKA divisional world titles! Way to go Ira!
On
July 13th, Team KMA Chief Instructor David Denov (again with the
assistance of KMA super Uke Sacha Ramberan) also stepped into the
ring to compete in the 18+ Black Belt Self-Defence Category of the
IKA World Championships and although they received the worst draw,
having to go first, David and Sacha wowed the crowd to complete
silence and set a standard that was unachievable by the other competitors,
giving them the title of IKA World Champions.
June
21, 2003 - The Way of The Warrior Open Karate Tournament
On
June 21, 2003, Ira Trifu represented Team KMA at the Way of the
Warrior and had a very solid competition day. First, she competed
in Self Defence without an attaker which has never been done in
the history of self defence divisions. Dare to be different! Her
strong kata then landed her a 1st place win and a chance to compete
for the junior colour belt grand championship on stage later in
the evening. Ira then proceeded to take 2nd place in a fighting
division that was the result of merging the female 15-17 year old
advanced division, and both the the male 15-17 interneidate and
advanced divisions. Finally, to close out the day, Ira tied for
first in the grand championship division and won the tie breaker
by a score of 5-0! Way to go! Keep up the good work.

June 8, Team KMA (affectionately known by those who know and love
us as Team Attitude) went to the Kai-Shin Hombu Dojo (headquarters)
in Mississauga and competed at the Kai-Shin Association Shiai. The
team that went included some rookie competitors as well as some
savvy veterans. All did very well. The results were as follows:

Trifu vs. Sean Krupnik Sean
Krupnick and Ira Trifu (both Team KMA members) met in the semi-final
round of the Kai-Shin Shiai on June 8, 2003. Ira is shown attempting
to hit Sean with a cartwheel kick where she tries to swing both feet
over and make contact with Sean's head. Albeit creative, her attempt
was unsuccessful and Sean scored on her immediately following the
kick. Ira got her revenge however by going on to win the fight and
place 2nd (losing to Kaleem Ali - another Team KMA member) in the
division. Sean took 4th. Ira also took 2nd place in her kata division,
losing to Sean (shown above).

Sweep In
the adult advanced kata division of the Kai-Shin Shiai n June 8, 2003,
Team KMA showed their dominance by placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the

their fighting division, with Sean finishing 4th, Ira 2nd, and the
ever fierce Kaleem (broken hand and all) finishing 1st.
